CRITICAL: Win Zip 5gb backup using command line

  • I was told, the beta version 9.0 of Winzip is the only way to zip files bigger than 2gb.

I downloaded this and the command-line utility. But, the utility asks for manual intervension.(press enter key to continue).

If I buy the official version of the command-line utility, will it be compatible with the beta version ? ANYONE gone through this before ? ANY ideas.. Please help. We are going live soon. Thanks much

  • WOW !! Thanks much. PKZIP command line utility solved my problem. Thanks again.

  • I tend to use WinRar. Lets you split the archive easily and seems to compress slightly better than winzip.

  • You will need to register the product to avoid the manual intervention on winzip command line utility

  • Use Winrar it has not limits to file size and you can configure to span automatically

  • Another product you can look at is SQL LiteSpeed. It allows you to compress SQL Server backups on the fly up to 95%. It is also faster then native backups.

  • I use WinRAR for pretty much any compression I need to do, but if you're looking for an archiver, you have to account for how slow WinRAR is. Zips tend to be a lot faster, but WinRAR generally gets about 10-15% (or more) better compression.

I know this is a bit of a tangent, but there was a program that I don't think ever made it out of beta named jar (not pkzip + the extra Java manifests, it's a completely different program). It was made by the same person/people that wrote arj, it compresses about as well as WinRAR does, and it does it about as fast as PKZip. The only problem is that it will only handle files up to 2GB in size... If you're compressing smaller files and don't mind it being beta, you can probably still find it on a site like download.com.

  • I use PKZip for Windows. It's cheap and well worth the money. It's also faster and more efficient on Memory usage than anything else out there. I have no problem with 8 gig files with it.

  • gzip works well for large files, but it is slow (but free which is the most impotant thing where I work).
