This morning our two SQL Server 7.0 boxes went into a tight CPU loop. No one could connect to these boxes, the MSSQLSERVER service could not be stopped. Although the blasting the box with a reboot fixed the problem. That fact that both of our 7.0 boxes went into a loop about the same time makes me wonder why. Both boxes are running on NT 4.0 SP6a using the same domain. Has anyone else ever had this happen?

Hi Greg,
Can't say that I can identify my problem with yours.
I have two Win2000 servers with SQL7 SP4 and different memory (512MB & 1GB). The following symtoms occur at random intervals (dys/weeks/months) mostly in this order but not necessarily.
No new connections allowed
QA (from pc) still Works
EM (from pc) very slow and eventually stops working
QA (from pc) eventually stops working
EM (from Server) eventually stops working
Server screen slows down
Server stops responding other than SQL
SQL eventually stops responding
If quick enough to get SQL to shutdown, then all OK and can restart SQL but 50/50 chance this won't work and reboot (switch off/on) only answer.
This use to happen quite regularly and required a daily reboot until I put on SQL7 SP4 and MDAC 2.7, then the length of time lengthened between failures. I still suspect memory leak but been unable to find it.
Not that this helps you but at least you're not the only one with problems like this.

Very interesting. What frequency to you roboot your box. I'm going to have to go back and look to determine when was the last time these boxes where rebooted. Still I find it hard to think that both machines would go into at almost the same time. Wierd.
Thank you for your thoughts.

Don't have a fixed time anymore, tend to boot on fail.
FYI one server rebooted 5 days ago the other 10 days.

We have in the past gone a number of months between reboots.
