Could links from newsletter use own window?

  • I have a minor pet peeve.  When you click on a link to a discussion from the newletter, if there is an existing Internet Explorer window the link will reuse that window.  Most of the time it is no big deal but occationally I have been researching something which gets replaced by choosing a link from the newsletter.

  • That's a local setting on the client. I have one machine that pops a new tab in Firefox. The other opens a new window in IE. Not sure what I changed, but I know the IE one used to open in my existing IE window.

  • Hi,

In IE7 (if thats what you are using ?) there is a setting in the Tools menu, Internet Options dialog, on the General tab, where it says Tabs click the Settings button and there is a setting at the bottom 'Open links in other programs' with three choices:

    • A new window
    • A new tab in the current window
    • The current tab or window

I have tried these options out and they change the way links behave from Microsoft Outlook

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

  • Even without client options, in IE you can always hold the shift key while clicking, or alternatively, right click on the link and select Open in New Window.

  • Too many fingers for first thing in the morning

  • I can't get IE7 because I am still on Windows 2000.  I will use the right-click, open in new window tip.  Thanks.

  • In IE6, go to Tools, Internet Options, then select the Advanced tab.  Scroll down a little, looking for “Reuse windows for launching shortcuts”.  Uncheck it, and it will fix the issue; I just did it on my machine and tested it (because I was having the same problem - thanks for asking the question!)

    Fewer fingers required...
