copy column names in result set

    dumb question- when I want to save the result set from query analyzer to excel how do I get the column names? Only the data copies into excel.

    Just set the result to "Text, tab delimited". You can get tab-delimited by Tools->Options and set it in the results tab. After this, (re-)reun your query, open excel, copy the result and paste ...
