Heh... rumor has it that's because the old treasurer for France had a typewriter where the comma key didn't work... 😛
Well, if it's true then too many typewrites all around Europe did not work.

Or worked quite funny way - because they actually use comma but as decimal point. And some countries (e.g. Germany) use both comma and dot but another way around: comma as a decimal point and dot as thousands separator.

There must be a massive failures in typewrites those times.

If you import into numeric column you'll never have a chance to sort anything out.
Insert will fail immediately.
