  • Nice question, always good to learn something new.

  • Wasn't aware of Contained Databases, so learned something new again today.

    Great questions, thanks Steve.

  • Another question from Steve on contained databases. I wonder what he has been playing around with?

There are naive questions, tedious questions, ill-phrased questions, questions put after inadequate self-criticism. But every question is a cry to understand (the world). There is no such thing as a dumb question. ― Carl Sagan

  • Thanks for giving me a reason to do some digging this morning. Learned a lot.

But, it's hard to concentrate, as I'm waiting for Steve to hit 30,000 points - kind of like waiting for your odometer to roll over. 😉

  • I was aware of what contained databases are...

At first I thought this was a trick question, because if you can't use AD credentials against a contained database then what good are they? After all the best practices recommendation is to use Windows authentication for everything SQL related.

Then I was like, ok so if it's a trick question, why would anybody want to use this? And then I was like, why in the world would you be able to only use groups or users but not both?

Finally I went with my original answer and got it right 🙂 Yay me?

  • The AD Credential thing is interesting. If there are matching AD credentials at the instance level, the authentication takes place there first, which makes sense. So if you move a partially contained database to a server that has a matching login, the login isn't contained.

Not a big deal, but interesting.

  • tks Steve

That is interesting. I was confused by Contained versus Partially Contained and assumed your question pertained to the former. Thanks for the interesting question.

  • Thanks for the question Steve. This one forced me to do some research.

  • thanks steve

Contained Databases are only partially contained in SQL Server 2012. Hopefully SQL Server 2014/2015 will be completely contained.

  • Thanks for a straightforward question, Steve!
