I got a request from someone today and need some assistance. They need to connect to an SSAS instance in someone's domain. They only have SSMS loaded on their machine. There is no Analysis Services option on the server type drop-down at the login screen. What do I need to have for him to be able to do this?

It sounds as if they have SSMS Express which will not allow connections to SSAS. Luckily, full SSMS is now free as part of SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition which can be downloaded from the Visual Studio Dev Essentials site. Only the management tools from this download need to be installed.

What PB_BI said.
It's also worth noting that you can access SSAS via BIDS or SSDT (depending on the version of SSAS you ate running).
