I'm new to AS and have recently installed AS 2014 along with SSDT. As an exercise I built and deployed a simple tabular model using AdventureWorksDW. However, I'm unable to connect to the model with Excel. I'm using Excel 2013. In the DATA ribbon I've selected 'From Other Sources' and copied the server name from the project properties page: localhost\TABULAR. Using Windows Authentication I get the following error message: 'Unable to connect to data source. Reason: Unable to locate database server. Verify that the database server name you entered is correct, or contact the database administrator for help.'
I've tried numerous server name variations, thinking that it may be looking for a different server name structure, even though I believe I'm conforming to the documentation I have...but have not had any luck. Does anyone have any guidance or suggestions that can get me past this road block?

Does the SSAS instance allow remote connections ? Is SQL Browser running on the server where SSAS is installed ?

You can also check with IT that there is no obscure group policy that prohibits these connections. Though more likely I would see that the service is running on the remote ( I assume) machine.
