I have installed SQL Server 2008 R2 on my machine I would like to connect to SQL server 2005 database on a server.
Can I make the connectiong using SSMS 2008 R2 ?

Yes.

yeah just connect like normal. The 2008 SSMS can connect to 2005 with no problem.
