I have an application that is accessed by desktops and laptops. I can access the sql server 2000 named instance fine at the desktop level but not with the laptop. You wouldn't think it would make a difference. I believe accessing the application via the laptop performs a download of some of the database objects. Any ideas and does anyone have a sample connection string to logon to a named instance?

check the MDAC level of the devices that are not able to connect to your named instance. It should be at least MDAC2.6 at client level.
btw you can download it the latest at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6c050fe3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&displaylang=en
but mdac_typ.exe is also on your install disks.
component checker can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=8F0A8DF6-4A21-4B43-BF53-14332EF092C9&displaylang=en
