I installed SQL Server 2016 enterprise edition 13.0.1601.5 on a windows 2016 Server. While i can connect from another SQL Server 2016 instance, i CANNOT connect from an existing SQL Server 2012 install: Error: 'The Token supplied to the function is invalid' I can't find any reference to a fix.

The title says SSMS and the text says SQL Server. So, which is it? Are you trying to connect to SQL Server 2016 from SSMS 2012? If so, yeah, that makes sense that you can't do that. This is because things have been upgraded in 2016. Get the new version of SSMS (17.8.2 I think). It's a stand alone install now. That version of SSMS will work with 2012 and with 2016 (and 2017 and Azure and 2014...).
