Hi,
I was hoping someone could clarify a problem I have with service pack 2. One of my colleagues has installed service pack 2 to our production server, but when trying to install the performance dashboard I received errors. On looking at the server, the instance version is 9.00.1399 which suggests its never been service packed.
But when going into control panel, add remove programs with updates turned on, it says SQL Server 2005 and then lists all the various service pack 2 elements underneath it with its install date.

I'm confused as to whether we have this installed or not, and whether its partially installed and there is something extra we need to do to tell Sql server that sp2 has been installed.

Are you trying to install the dashboard on the server itself or from your workstation via SSMS.
In the second case check the version of SSMS. See under Help>About which version of SSMS you have. If it's 1399 you mnust install SP2 on the client.

In the Query tool run this select @@version.

SP2 isn't necessarily an all-or-nothing process. It has patches for all the possible components, which means some could get installed while others might not have gotten installed at all.
Further point, if you're using client tools on your PC and you're looking at your local install, you'll get a different version than if you're looking at the server install. So, you don't just install SP2 on the server. You have to install it on all your client workstations to make sure everything is consistant.
EDIT: Oh, and I believe you have to install it for each instance you have. So if you have multiple instances and it was only installed once (on the default for example) that might be where your problem is. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about this. It's been a while since I installed a service pack.
