configure the new box for reporting services?

  • :w00t:

    Hi there,

Ok, you have a large number of questions so I will answer in point form:

•Having the reporting databases (Sharepoint$ReportServer/TempDB and K2$ReportServer/TempDB) on the SharePoint and K2 server respectively is in my opinion the way forward. Technically yes there is a performance overhead but that is very dependant on how you are using RS.

•You could put your reporting services on the RS (4th) server if you wanted but this would not help your performance overhead much, if anything the overall overhead would go up because the RS databases would have to communicate with their source servers over the network.

•Regarding licenses, if you don’t know your licensing structure I cant advise. There are literally dozens of ways of licensing SQL and they are not simple to get your head round. Basically to run RS (with or without the database engine) requires a SQL 2005 Server Standard license. Even if your estate uses Enterprise you don’t necessarily need it for RS. However you then need CAL's (these can be for users or servers or can be CPU based (and most recently you have to license individual cores!).

As I understand it you situation is this:

•Server 1 – SharePoint: This is to be set into an a/p cluster with Server 3 (named instance).

•Server 2 – K2: This is to be set into an a/p cluster with Server 3 (named instance)

•Server 3 – This is to be the passive node for the named instance of Server 1 and Server 2. It must be part/membered to 2 Windows clusters.

•Server 4 – This is to be your RS server to link to Server 1 and Server 2 databases. At the end of the day you must decide where you want the RS databases to be. For my money I would have one set on Server 1 and the other on Server 2 but you could put both on Server 4. You could even put both on Server 1 and not bother about Server 2 (but I would avoid this)

Hope this makes things clearer. Before replying with more questions, suggest you read some articles on the subject and just get it clear in your head. Try drawing it out (always helps me). Oh and I really would speak to whoever is responsible for your licenses and ensure that your doing things properly (else, get some help quick!). :hehe:
