Concurrent Administration

Some people might see this as a trick question, because no where does it state "Full Backup & Shrink THE SAME database"....

    Good one though.

I suppose if you had two servers you could run anything concurrently.;-)

  • Got it right because I took it at face value. Thanks for the question.

  • Talked myself out of the correct answer. Good question and I learned something new today. Thanks.

That's a fair point. I did have to guess the intent of the question a little.

I knew I can't backup and shrink the same database at the same time, but I've got 40 databases on the server, I can certainly backup database A and shrink Database B at the same time, as I've done it.

I literally looked at the two answers and came to the decision that whichever one I picked, I would be wrong.

  • I tried and it worked. I started first the backup an then started te shrink operation and all went well.

  • Good question, thanks.

The tougher question is: what am I going to get my wife for her birthday next week :ermm:

    Cheers,

    Steve

  • ...I immediately answered Yes to this question because I thought of two different databases and filegroups. So it is possible to do a full backup and a shrink at the same time so this is a bogus question.

Am I the only person that is thinking outside the box? I got it wrong but for a good reason this time.

I'm with you. Nevertheless, this QotD was worthwhile if only because it pointed us to a relevant MSDN page:-P.

Fair? Didn't say same instance either? Or same company.

Let's be a little reasonable here.

  • I didn't see the note about starting the shrink and changing the files.

I'll update the question to clarify.

    <nitpick>

I still disagree with the question and answer. Both can run at the same time. The only limitation is that the backup must finish before the shrink finishes.

I don't have time to test out what happens if the shrink wants to finish before the backup - I suspect it'll be blocked, but I hope someone who does have some time on their hands is willing to test this.

  • I changed the question too, to note that the shrink runs shorter.

It's certainly a strange behavior, and one I'm not sure I like.

I think I'll refund all points for now.

  • I'm a little late this morning so the questions was re-crafted before I answered.

Tks Steve and tks everyone for the interesting input.

    Cheers

    Me too.

I wonder what happens if a shrink is started when a backup is running and tries to change the file size while it's still running. Possibilities seem to be (a) the shrink is aborted, (b) the shrink is blocked until the backup is complete, (c) the shrink finishes and the backup fails. I hope it's not (c), and (a) seems rather pointless.

    Definitely an interesting question.

That would hardly be in the fine tradition of the SSC QotD would it? 😉

I said 'a little' because the question just might have been about whether backup and shrink could occur on the same *instance* at the same time or not.

  • Could you please give my point back if possible? 🙂

I answered YES on the spot. I didn't know that there's a situation where one of them would fail though.

Great question and learnt something new.
