computer name change

  • IF your going to eliminate the computer which currently has the name you want to use just remove it from the domain then in the AD tools reset that computer account then take the new one and add it to the domain using that name if the computer died

all you need to do is in AD is reset the computer account and add the new one using that name.

  • Thank you all.

Steve said: "The names of the groups do not matter. They will not be changed automatically, but you can change them if you like. "

I will probably not change them, Steve, can you explain a little bit more why they don't need to be changed, in case in the future if I want to change them to refelct the new computer name, I need to change them in both places one is in windows local user group, the other is in management studio-security-login. Correct? and if i change the name, will the SID of those groups are changed or not? I have vague memory that I read from somewhere if I change the security group, the SID will be changed? Does that have anything with this? Do they use SID of the group name?

    Thank you!

  • Xavier Valdes, when you said to "reset that computer account in AD"

    What does reset mean?

    Thank you

  • If you go into your AD tools (Active Directory tools "Users and Computers" and select

the computer name in question from the computer names list you right click on said name and select reset account.

Keep in mind if you do it on a computer that needs to stay on the domain you will have to add it again.
