Compatibility Modes

  • We are still running on 2000. I was tasked, when I started with this company three months ago, with upgrading to 2005. After doing all of my homework and getting ready for the upgrade, my boss decided to wait since the lease on our hardware does not expire until January of next year. So, with that on hold, I'm now pondering moving directly to 2008.

The question here relates directly to one of our vendors. They have certified they will run with 2005 but they REQUIRE the compatibility mode to be set to 80 (2000). Their recommendation is to go ahead and upgrade to 2005 now instead of 2008. In fact, they haven't even started testing their application and indicated they won't until SP1 is released. I really don't want to do two upgrades over the next year and would prefer to stay with one version for the next 6-8 years (meaning I don't want to upgrade again in 2011 to the next version). All of my remaining vendors have certified to work with 2005 in compatibility mode 90.

What compatibility modes will be available in 2008? Based on this little bit of information, would you recommend following the vendor's advice or would you move directly to 2008, taking the chance the application may fail? I understand testing is critical but we can't possibly test all of the application.

  • I'm running the last CTP, not the RC0 that just came out, but I have 8, 9 & 10 compatability modes. That's 2000, 2005 & 2008.

I'd suggest not going. The problem with third party applications is that you need them to support you if something goes wrong. If they can always say "Not our problem, you're running the wrong version of SQL Server" then you end up unsupported. Sorry. The rest of your logic, I agree with. 2008 would be better to upgrade to at this point.
