Hello all,
I am currently creating SSIS packages with MS VS 2005 against MS SQL Server 2005 SP2 I am going to start writing reports and deploying them on a 2008 RS SSRS instance.
Should I install the version of BIDS that comes with 2008 R2? Will I still be able to develop the 2005 SSIS packages? Is it possible or recommended to install multiple versions of BIDS?
Looking for recommendations on how to use BIDS in against different versions.
Thanks!

WE have both BIDS installed as we have a similiar situation as you. While we have been able to publich reports from VS 2005 to 2008 it is not possible to deploy a SSIS from VS 2008 to 2005. The metadata is to different and you will get an error in 2005. Since there are some new report features in 2008 we installed both VS 2005 and 2008.

As far as I concern,If you are creating a package any way you define a connection to the actual server. so it deosn't
matter I guess.
all new versions have backward compatibilty even though if you are on the wrong path.
That is true if you only plan to run the package from VS but you can not publich a SSIS package created in 2008 to a 2005 Integration server.

Its up to you
Will I still be able to develop the 2005 SSIS packages?
yes,you can developin 2005 and execute in 2008, No issues.
Is it possible or recommended to install multiple versions of BIDS?
possible and not recommended by any one to use multiple versions its purely depends on your environment.

Thanks Dan. The relevant piece of information provided here is that I will not be able create a SSIS package in VS 2008 and then publish this to my my 2005 Server.

Both SQL Server 2005 and 2008 R2 client tools can be installed together. I have that here myself and use the 2008 SSMS tools unless I need to work with SSIS or SSRS. If I need to work on a report that is going to be deployed to our 2005 reporting services, I open up the 2005 BIDS - if I am working with the 2008 R2 SSRS server, I open the 2008 R2 BIDS.
No problems working with both on the same system.
