Regarding SQL Server 2000 Personal and *Workgroup* editions, here is the upgrade path according to MSDN:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx
However, when I checked the updated BOL, "Editions of SQL Server 2000" topic, there is no SQL Server 2000 *Workgroup* edition (it's also mentioned in this article). Whats up with that?

SQL Server 2005 Express Editition is definitely an improvement over MSDE. The availability of SQL Server Management Studio Express (a free download) has certainly made SQL Server 2005 Express a lot friendlier to work with than MSDE.
Could it be that the Linux community and MySQL popularity had a lot to do with Microsoft releasing so much more functionality for free?

Possibly worth pointing out that Database Snapshots are only available in Enterprise Edition as far as I understand it.

What about SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition that is bundled with Visual Studio 2005? Which product is this closest to? Express, Entreprise or whatsoever??
