Interesting, but what's wrong with SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion')?

The idea is to be able to compare installed versions of (clustered!) sql instances across multiple servers. For example let's say you have 3 nodes cluster with 15 sql instances installed on each of them. It is 45 installations! The failover between nodes, for instances Inst_O & Inst_P for example, will also trigger databases upgrade or downgrade.
