Comments and Bugs on New Design

  • Is it just me or does the refresh after posting not work anymore.

I'm pretty sure it worked this morning.

  • I like the new layout better, no bugs found from just looking at it for 5min. It is easier than ever to navigate - good job! G.

  • We're all about going to .net but we're waiting for the new forums .net forums to come out since our site wraps around them. That should be next month and then the development process will take some time after then.

I really like the look and feel. However, the load time when I clicked the "Active Threads" menu was way to long. May need some indexing. Or you may want to look at your cashe options. I am supprised you did not take advantage of the .Net technoligy.

  • When bringing up the "Sub Menus" by hovering over the "Site Menu" items, I am able to see the text behind the the "Sub Menus". It is basically still readable, but looks just a little funny.

  • Now that I am at work, the sub menus show up properly, although there is a slight delay. Here I am using IE 6.0 SP1.

I am also less a fan of side menus than top menus, but I'm not complaining! This site is all about function to me, form is important only insofar as it furthers the function and ease of use of the site...

  • May be just me, but when trying to 'subscribe' to a single topic/thread (ie using the checkbox), i get a jscript error, plus no pop-up. Line 606 Char 18 , Object Expected.

  • Yes, when subscribing, normally a popup comes up telling that you've been subscribed.

So it seems that there is a massive problem with popups.

  • qod.asp doesn't fit on the screen. You have to scroll horizontically.

I'm not sure if it was this way before.

IE 5.x and lower all handle the Z-Index of items differently with regards to DHTML, the default was always that certain objects were on the top. The changed a bit in 6. Later versions should be even better with this.

  • Ok one thing I don't like is the realestate hog on the left. I use a high resolution (big monitor) and the blue left side is set as a percentage. You should consider making the width fixed (slightly larger than the largest piece in the area) to offset the left but leave as much right side real estate as possible.

Don't much care for the dissolve effect of the menu.

You might want to consider making the top black bar a bit smaller and decrease the font size just a hair (thing is hugh under 800X600 and more than enough at 1600X1200).

The Google search is nice but it would be nice to be able to use the advanced search functionality without having to remember the Google syntax.

The items below the bottom black line should be moved. The TopHosts.Com ad can easily fit under the left side ad.

This info Contact Us | Terms and Conditions | Advertise With Us! " Could be added to the menu order place in another piece below the ad on the left. And the other sponsor ad at the bottom could be moved above the black line or elsewhere. I always stop at the black line and rarely look below it. The Copywrite is fine where it is.

    I am still thinking.......

  • I like the new design.

I have found that when reviewing other columnists there is a link to see all their articles. However, when I click on my name. I don't get the link to see all articles. Can you fix this so that I can easily click and see all the articles written by me? Thanks!

  • Antares686, I'll see what I can do. I did shrink the upper bar a few moments ago but still need to shrink the left bar. Tweak here and tweak there. Killed the footer stuff you mentioned. Google is going to be hard. I'll dig up how to do that.

  • Antares686, good suggestion. I set the left bar to be fixed 155 px so on those who have larger resolution it doesn't kill the real estate. It was set to a relative 18% of the screen. Great idea. I also reduced the disolve time on menus.
