Combining SQL versions on Cluster

  • Hi All

Is it possible to combine SQL server 2008 R2 and SQL server 2012 on the same Cluster? We are starting of Sharepoint 2013 project and the developers wants a 2012 SQL and the cluster is currently 2008 R2 and we don't want to upgrade the existing instances to 2012.

I believe it should be possible since all binaries are located in different directories. The only problem are the shared feature, which has to be upgraded, but I believe they are backward compatible.

Hope someone here has experience in this or have some insights.

    Thanks

    /Bo

  • Yes this is called multi-instance cluster. Combine 2000, 2005, 2008 and 2012 in a same server is possible. All Sql Server versions can have their own upgrades, etc except for the shared features.

I got this info from another site. heres the documentation. for your reference 🙂
