Active nodes have at least one sql instance currently running on it.
Passive nodes do not have any sql instances running on it, but are ready to have another node's instances transferred to it.
A given sql instance can only be running on one node at a time. So, a/a means that there are at least two sql instances, and then they are currently running on different nodes.
