You can learn a lot by reading the books, but until you set up a cluster yourself the full horror of what you are doing is not apparent 🙂

If you have a MSDN OS or Technet subscription then download W2008 R2 and build yourself a Hyper-V host and some Hyper-V guests, and create a cluster on two of the guests. Then you are ready to create your first SQL cluster.

I often say that clustering SQL Server gives you new and interesting ways to trash your SQL instance. If you really want to learn about clustering SQL Server then you need to take the time to learn how to build and dismantle a Windows cluster, and how to do the same with SQL Server.

The books will tell you what to expect if everything works OK, but very little about what to do when an inevitable problem happens. You need hands-on experience to learn how to do the troubleshooting.
