I am installing a 2005 32-bit active/active cluster. In previous shops where I've worked I've just asked the network team for an IP address and they've given me one to use (for each node) for SQL. Where I am at now, they want to know what kind of DNS entry I need for the IP address(es). I have no idea how to answer this question. I know with regular DNS entries you can alias things, is that what we need to do here? If so, how would that look..
virtualservername\sqlinstancename ###.###.###.###
or
physicalservername ###.###.###.###
Do we even want the IP in the DNS?

Is your DNS running AD integrated? If so it should create an A record in DNS for the virtual server name upon installation. If not you can ask them to create an A record for the new virtual server name.

Our DNS is not AD integrated, it's at the hardware level. We don't run windows DNS, everything is handled at the network switch/hardware level. We have cisco routers.

K - just let them know you need an A record in DNS for your new virtual server (i.e. MyNewSQLServerName).

you need A records for each of the physical hosts, each SQL instance, the cluster IP and if you run Windows 2003 then the MSDTC IP as well

Just for clarification - you don't create an A record for the SQL instance - just the virtual server name - if this is an active/active there should only be one. Also, as SQL Noob suggested if you don't already have A records for the host, cluster virtual name, etc. You will need to create them.
