I won't speak for Cloudera, but I believe your assertion is incorrect as to their Apache contributions. Information I received from both Vendors indicated that Hortonworks has the most committers to the Hadoop Core and Cloudera has the most committers across the entire Hadoop ecosystem.

Not sure what you mean by comparing this sentence

"Basically Cloudera leverages off the work that others put in, package some extra stuff & then state they are the best."

with

as that is my point. Hortonworks helps build the engine & Cloudera throws a new bumper on & goes "TADA!!"

Have a bit of a read of these... whilst older they show the direction from a few years back & they have only committed more (pun intended).

I've spent a lot of time with the Hortonworks team in my area. But recently, I have been exploring Cloudera. It's unfortunate to hear they are not contributing as much as Hortonworks, but it makes sense on why Horton continuously highlights how much they contribute. I just never put much thought into the selling point because I assumed EVERYONE does. :hehe:

Hadoop Core means HDFS, YARN and MapReduce. Thus, these projects have more Hortonworks contributors than Cloudera.

However for other vital Hadoop components such as Spark, Hive, HBase, Pig, Tez, Zookeeper, etc. Cloudera is in the lead among contributors.
