System:
Model: HP ProLiant DL185 G5
Hardware
4 – Quad-core AMD Opteron™ Processor 2376
16 GB memory
Controller Card: Smart Array P600 SAS/SATA StorPort driver, Version: 6.12.4.32
OS on Raid 0; 60 GB logical drive
Data on Raid 5;
Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
We are migrating to a new server, listed above. The install looked good and once the quirks were ironed out, the remote clients worked perfectly. The hang up was the local copy of the client tools never updated along with the service packs (3).
The old server:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.3042.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2005.090.3042.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.086.1830.00 (srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.832
Operating System 5.2.3790
The new server:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.3042.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2005.090.3042.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.3053
Operating System 5.1.2600
Since I remote in most of the time, it affects me alot. I removed SQL Server and re-installed it three times with the same result.
Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

well - somewhere to get started, maybe generate some thoughts
did the db instance update to SP3?
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel')
did the sp3 installer fail or give error messages?
errors in the install logs? Default location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG

Unfortunately, the HP Raid Controller failed the day after install. HP has a rep at the site now trying to figure what happened. I can still get on the system but the services for SQL Server have stopped now and will not start up. I have the boot strap log below:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.1399.06

Setup succeeded with the installation, inspect the log file completely for status on all the components.

Did you say this was in a clustered environment? If so you will possibly need to apply the service pack to the tools on the physical nodes as opposed to the virtual nodes.
August 4, 2009 at 11:57 am
It is a single server set up.
August 4, 2009 at 12:06 pm
It did throw an error during the notification installation. I thought it was because I didn't elect to install that feature.
August 5, 2009 at 9:39 am
Any ideas?
August 5, 2009 at 10:52 am
OK - so to confirm, run this on your database:
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel')
When you re-run the SP3 installer and hit next a few time you should see the list of "features". When you click on Client Components what does the status say? Upgrade???
Also, you mentioned server packs
did you install all the services packs? 1,2,3??
If so, you only need to install the latest.

I am unable to log onto the server at this time. I am going to have to remove SQL Server and start over. The controller card failed and had to be replaced. Since then, the SQL services stopped and and refuse to start.
When I installed it, I didn't install SP1 just SP2 then SP3. This time around, I was going to install SP1 and SP2. Before I install SP3, I want to back up the server image to be on the safe side.
August 5, 2009 at 11:14 am
Just install the base install (RTM) then go straight to SP3.
No need to install the other ones. It's cumulative.
Then if your client tools don't update, re-run the SP again and see what it says is installed for each "Feature" listed.
August 5, 2009 at 11:20 am
That is what I thought. On my development box, dell 690, I tried that and the SP3 install crashed every time I tried to install it, so I did SP2 and then SP3 and it worked.
My client tools updated pefectly.
