We are currently running SQL 2005, and using client tools from 2005.
We will be installing a new server with 2008 on it in the not to distant future...
Could I install the client tools from 2008 on to my PC without it disturbing the 2005 tools? - i.e. have the two running together without any problems?

Rob,
There is no need to have both installed. I use SSMS for SQL 2008 to administer SQL2K, SQL2K5 and SQL2K8 servers all from my own machine.

You can run 2000, 2005 and 2008 all together if you'd like.
As the previous posted stated, there isn't much of a need for SSMS '05 with the exception of if you use activity monitor against 2000 servers as it won't work because it's coded to use the DMV's which obviously don't exist in 2000.
The only real need for client tools from 2k5 is BIDS (business intelligence development studio) if you're still developing for 2005 (SSIS/SSRS).
