I have added a non trusted domain SQL Server 2000 box to my client machine, but am still not able to connect. I have verified the port and the uid / pwd works when I remote in to the machine and login.
I have checked the n/w settings from a different machine from which I am able to connect. I get the SQL Server does not exist or access denied error
Anyone have any ideas what else I need to look for?
TIA

It is assumed sql server authentication is what is failing since the domain is not trusted ...

However, when I register the server with the IP, port (same as in client config), it works

If you can register the server using the IP address but not the name, it sounds as though you might have a DNS issue. Check with your network guys.

But isn't that the whole point of creating a client alias, that I provide the IP and port and I can use the name. While using EM or QA it works when I use 127.0.0.1, 1234 but without the port (i.e. just 127.0.0.1) it doesn't.

I know, you would think that, but I'm still having to edit hosts files even on trusted domains in my organisation. Just thought it might be worth a try.
