Client Access License

  • We have couple Access and VB applications running on 5 computers. These applications use either OLEDB or ODBC to connect to a SQL database. Do the 5 computers need 5 CALs' to run the apps? Thanks.

  • You either need 5 CAL's or a per-processor license (which will cost more than a server license and 5 CAL's).

  • Especially since Standard Edition comes with 10 CAL's and Enterprise Edition with 25 CAL's.

  • Thanks.

Another question: when I have one SQL server license on a 4 CPU server, is it all I need as long as I have enough SQL CAL to cover the workstations?

  • Yes, server/CAL licensing does not care about the number of processors you have in the server.

I would suggest you go to the MS website and read about the licensing if you want additional details.

  • That's for an instance. It gets weird with different editions, instances, VMs, etc. And it's always changing.

Definitely call MS if you have questions.
