Citrix Server needs SQL server?

  • Hi there, I am not a technical person. I wish someone could tell me if a SQL server is needed for Citrix Server? If yes, what for? Thanks for help in advance.

  • I do believe Citrix can use SQL to store information about users.  Mostly an issue where you have a Citrix farm I imagine.

  • Thanks for the info. So it is not a mandatory requirement for Citrix to pair with SQL. This certainly helps.

  • My understanding is that by default Citrix will use a MS-Access database to hold its critical information.  You have an option to use SQL Server in place of Access.

You need to take a view about how safe it is to hold any data you may wish to access in the future in Access, or if you prefer to hold it in a safe place such as SQL Server.

  • Hi, Citrix needs to create a datastore in either access or SQL or Oracle.  The datastore is very important as it holds all of the user information, the applications available and every other part of the static Citrix farm info.

A word of warning don't be tempted to use access as the Datastore even for very small farms.

We configured a Citrix server 5 years ago as we only needed one,  but then added a second about 2 years later.  We now want to commission 2 new servers in replace of the old ones.  The problem is that you can never remove the original server from the farm as it contains the data store.  Also if it fails then you cannot add applications to the farm until you re-instigate that server.  It is possible to migrate the datastore from Access to SQL but this can be a tricky process.

However if you use SQL you can easily backup and restore this database if you need to.  Even if you don’t have a full blown SQL server you can use the smaller and free SQL express or msde version.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi, your insight is certainly very helpful. Thanks very much for your response.
