Hi All
Just wanted to get some advice about selecting I/O RAID controllers for a server which is going to be hosting a SQL 2005 database.
Also, are there any pointers/links to follow when specing up a server, obviously this depends on the use of the server, but I just want to have an idea as to what to look out for hardware wise.

As with so many things SQL related, it depends. 😉 What's the db going to be mainly used for , by how many users , how many transactions per minute, what RAID layout you'll run and so on.
I know much of this can start off with a finger-in-the-air guess but it gives a clue. Generally, SQL will soak up as much hardware as you throw at it. If you're specifying a server from scratch from someone like HP there's normally an option to add (for minimal cost) an upgraded RAID controller rather than using the on-board one.
Unless the db is going to be for 10 people running a few transactions per day then it's worth the extra few hundred pounds vs the couple of thousand pounds on the overall server.

Use R1/R10, not 5.
Go with a major vendor, stick to what they recommend with the server to eliminate driver issues.
