I tried changing the default backup directory on my 2005 and 2008 server by adding a string My Computer\hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\mssqlserver\mssqlserver, said string called BackupDirectory to a local drive. I restarted the service, and it didn't change. I restarted the server, and it didn't change.
This is the MSDN article that I pulled the info from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179313%28SQL.90%29.aspx
I have a feeling the key isn't correct, but I haven't found any other good info on where to set such a thing. It's defaulting to the SQL installation directory.
Thanks for any suggestions!

The article you included in your post said that the location is...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.n\MSSQLServer
You didn't include the "MSSQL.n" part of the location. This value is probably "MSSQL.1" but it is dependent upon the installation order and the number of instances you have installed. You shouldn't need to create this key - it should already exist (it should have been created when you installed the instance)
