We have a few 'test' SQL Servers that have 5-10 users total that were installed as by CPU (2) but the license that was purchased was by seat. It appears that there is no way officially to change the install to reflect this in SQL 2000 or 2005 as it states you must de-install and re-install picking the different licensing method. Does anyone know of another way to change the licensing model without reinstalling SQL Server?

In 2005 there is no place to provide the licensing information on install, so it is not limited or registered anywhere. You only have to be compliant with acquiring and maintaining the proper license purchases.
On 2000, I am not sure, but I believe doing the uninstall/reinstall might be the only way....let's see what other think about this.

This doesn't really matter, as long as you have the paper to support what you are running.
If you are doing this because you need to move the CPU license to another server, and are worried about auditing/compliance, you do need to reinstall.

We are attempting to make sure we are in compliance and it appears our 'test' SQL Server licenses were purchase as CAL base but installed as two CPU's. My Director states that if we get audited that we need to prove server by server that the licenses we paid for are the ones that we have installed. That is why I ask because I need to change our test servers SQL install to show CAL based and not CPU based.

I think you're stuck with uninstall/reinstall.

That is exactly what I feared. SQL 2005 does not keep track of this. Only SQL 2000. Thanks!
