Changed Server Windows name and now seeing different names using various sql queries

  • Our IT guy recently change the server name on my request from CSIADOLP1 to CSIADRPT01. I did use sp_dropserver and sp_addserver.

    I am seeing different results.

I have attached the screenshot of error I am seeing. I would really appreciate if somebody can present the cause and solution for this. I did lot of google search on it but cannot find anything that would help me.

    select @@SERVERNAME ----CSIADOLP01

    go

    sp_helpserver ----- csiadrpt01

    go

    SELECT 'MachineName', SERVERPROPERTY('MachineName')

    Union all

    SELECT 'ServerName', SERVERPROPERTY('ServerName')

    /**

    MachineNameCSIADRPT01

    ServerName CSIADRPT01

    **/

  • Have you restarted SQL Server Service since the sp_addserver?

looking at the query result set and seeing IDs 1 and 2, i would say you didnt specify the 'local' parameter when executing sp_addserver

    You should have ran

    sp_addserver 'servername', 'local'

Then restart the SQL Server instance afterwards

  • After adding the server with 'local' in the query and restarting sql server did the trick.

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

  • you're welcome 😉
