  When we went from SQL 7 to SQL2000 we named the SQL2000 instance "SQL2000" (real original, right?).

  SQL 7 is long gone.

  Is it possible to rename an instance back?

  Or is it necessary to do a reinstall and then move the databases involved, jobs, DTS, etc. (I thought about trying to move MSDN or MASTER but I suspect I woudl break so many things I do not want to think about it).

  You can' rename instance but you can create server alias.
