It has been many years since I looked into getting certified. Would someone please explain what makes the best sense for a SQL Server DBA? There is Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Database Administrator 2008 which appears to be one exam. In the old days there was Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) which was many exams. Am I missing something or is there more to the current ceritifcation for DBAs?
What is the path to get certified as a SQL Server 2008 DBA?
Thanks for the guidance,
Steve

Microsoft has changed the names of the certs a bit, and made them more specialized. The main information is here: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-sql-server.aspx
There's a SQL Server TS, or Tech Specialist, which is one exam. There are 3 areas, however, so you can be:
- Admin, Implementation and maintenance
- Developer - DB Developer exam
- BI Specialist - both areas (implementation and development).
The next level up, which would be like the MCDBA, is the ITPro, which has 3 corresponding areas as well. It's one exam for 2008, a couple more for 2005. There are more advanced certs, the MCM and MCA, which require time at Microsoft.

Personally, I like this diagram (attached) better than the one on the Microsoft site.
