Central RS Server

  • Hi....sorry, real newbie to SQL RS, so excuse the basic question!

I have a number of SQL Server DB’s (2008 & R2) all running on different servers, none of which currently have RS installed. However we have a number of SQL jobs on each of these which I think would be useful for the users to view via RS. These reports wouldn’t be resource intensive so I wanted to understand the configuration options.

Is it possible to have a new separate server as my RS server, which would point to the other DB servers when it was requested to run any reports? Should this separate RS server hold the RS databases and the RS Web server parts ie like a single server installation and connect to the DB servers when running reports. Would the DB hosts need any RS elements installed on them?

Any help or links on setup options would be appreciated

    Thanks very much

    Simon

  • Hi,

Yes you would have a separate RS server which would contain the report server databases.

When you run the reports they would connect to the different databases on different servers.

We have this setup, I don't think you need to have anything installed on the other databases you just need a connection.

The different types are setup are Native or sharepoint integration, Native is when you have rs installed on its own and use the reports through report manager. Sharepoint mode is when the front is integrated to sharepoint and front end is accessed through sharepoint.

  • Hi, really sorry that I haven't sent my thanks earlier. Very grateful for your answer and links. About to build a VM to 'play' with next week. Thanks again!!
