Hi Everyone
I'm planning to take up MS BI training. I possess the knowledge of SQL DBA and working as a Junior DBA. Pls. provide me your valuable views on whether possessing career in MS BI is beneficial for me?
I know possessing knowledge on MS BI is always beneficial. But from the current and future market perspective, will it be a good option?
I thank everyone of you in advance for giving your views. 🙂

Research the market where you live or intend to live. My observation is that BI can be vendor/geographically centric. I live in upstate NY, near the capital and Cognos & Business Objects are the overwhelming preference of employers to the MS BI Stack. However, downstate and in NJ, there is a significant demand for MS BI. Also BI is typically being used by larger companies, so if you live in a rural area without a lot of access to medium and large companies you may have trouble finding employment within BI specifically. I would also explore opportunites with your current employer. You may be able to use new BI skills without leaving your current job.

This would definitely be a good move and with the DBA background a nice compliment. I might be a tad biased though:) As previously stated I would check out the opportunties and demand in your area, but I don't believe you will have any issues tracking down any jobs, especially since you also possess the DBA knowledge.
With MS BI you have lots of different areas you can look at with the database engine, SSIS, SSRS (and Report Builder), SSAS (and Data Mining), Excel (and PowerPivot), ProClarity (still around), PerformancePoint, SharePoint. SharePoint is a key strategy for Microsoft, so you will definitely need to have an understanding of that product as well.
Pick one area at a time and read up on a book, do some of the Microsoft Virtual Labs, watch some webcasts, etc. and then move on to the next product. Having knowledge of more than one is always a plus.
Let me know if you have any further or specific questions and I would be more than happy to help you out in anyway that I can.

There is Certification (Exam 70-448) available for "SSL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance". I haven't looked at it yet but plan to work through the Self-Paced training that Microsoft provides.
