Career Change

  • You bring up very valid points. I am definitely going to take Alvin's advice and ask all those questions from them.

Regarding my current professional situation, I am not happy with the job that I have. I feel as though I have been stuck in one spot without any progress and potential. The paycheck is the only thing that is holding me. At first I got excited about the new opportunity because of the type of company, perks, location, and much much more. Then when I started thinking about my capabilities and what will be expected, that's when hands began to tremble.

  • If it sounds like we are discouraging you, we aren't.

Making the right choice is a difficult one in a position such as yours. It would be an awful situation if either party decided that you weren't working out after just a few weeks. Where would you be then? Find out more information about the job and the offer before making the decision. Especially since you are employed.

  • Let's see if I pass my first test if the database is corrupt. 🙂

I would probably run dbcc checkdb ('mydatabase') with All_ErrorMsgs

  • I don't think you are discouraging me. I think you all bring up very solid points and allowing me to step back and evaluate my capabilities and look at the reality of things. I knew that there would be more responses here that will put me in reality; otherwise, I wouldn't have posted this topic.

I really appreciate all the replies......Let's continue. 😉

  • Cool. It returns several lines of errors and the last two lines read.

CheckDB found 42 allocation errors and 137 consistency errors in database 'mydatabase'.

DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

    Next step?

Honestly, the very fact that a company is looking to hire, as their only DBA, someone with no DBA experience sets of lots of warning bells. Either they've never had a DBA and don't know what one brings (in which case the offered salary is probably low and the mess in the environment high) or they have a problem and they are desperate (in which case you're walking into big problems)

  • Allocation errors probably will require to run hardware diagnostics and check disk space.

Consistency errors I am not sure but my first thought would be to run a repair.

Obviously I will have to evaluate each error to make the final decision.

    Passed?

  • Nope.

Good answer - go find backups.

Better answer - ask for help because this is out of my depth.

  • Should I also decide based on the size of the company?

If a company is relatively small (100-120 people), would it make a difference on the amount of work required?
