Just re-posting this, hope it is not against the rules as I have not had any further replies yet.
Hi All,
I am quite new to the forums and SQL admin so please be gentle.
When I try to view any maintenance plan history it just doesn't happen. The task hangs. I am able to kill the task and server is then ok.
This happens locally and remotely.
I am able to run queries on sysdbmaintplan_history so I don't think database is behaving badly.
Any help appreciated.

When you open the properties for the maintenance plan by right clicking it, the last tab under it is for reporting. Can you check how many maximum rows are you allowing to be written to sysdbmaintplan_history table ?

The number of rows varies for the different plans, most are 1000 I noticed one is 10,000???.
Some do not report to db at all.
Its very strange, is it just the size of the msdb database is 160mb. SysDBmaintplan_history is 300939 rows.
If I am not being specific enough please let me know.
