Can't replicate to server using IP address

Hello friends,
I'm setting up replication to the other side of the pacific and i can connect to the IP address through SQL Server but i can not setup replication it needs the server name. How can i setup this up, so when i type in the server name it knows to look at a specific IP address. The server is not on the domain and is a stand alone.

Hello friends,

I've been able to resolve the issue with assigning server name to IP (Server Configuration Manager, alias) but now it seems I've come up with another issue.

'The selected Subscriber does not satisfy the minimum version compatibility level for of the selected publication.'

The Publisher is sql2005 and the subscriber is sql2008 i seriously doubt that sql2008 is not backwards compatible, so is there something i must setup before??

you will need "PULL" subscription instead of push.

Across domains, I think you need to setup accounts on both servers with the same name and same password.

Thanks heaps for all your advice it has really helped.

I have another query if anyone can help. Because the snapshot is soooo massive its taking an ice age for the subscriber to apply it. I've hear along the grape vine through various colleges that sql2005 and sql2008 can have its snapshot taken, compressed and then copied to another medium and then applied to the subscriber server manually. Has anyone has any experience in such a operation and if so can provide a heads up on what is required.
