Cant remote connect to a SBS2003 server from xp clients

  • Hi all.

Im stumped. I have a sbs2003 server all patched up and a xp client with the right tools all patched up but I cant connect to the server.

However the dodgy old 2k box sitting in the corner can fine.

The error from enterprise manager trying to connect is

    "reason:Invalid connection.

    ConnectionOpen (Invalid Instance()).."

    XP Firewall is off.

    Heeeeeeellllllppppp!

On a side note, when you go looking for register entryies as presented in some solutions, the registry entries for the default entries arent there. If you try to manually add them then all connectivity to the SQL server dies......

I only tried it once as its a production server.

Is it possible xp is still blocking the return ports even though firewall is turned off?

If so, can I add a "let enything from this address in" setting to the opp sys to try and determine if this is a problem?

    Thanks in advance!

    Bruce

  • Is this a default SBS install? Can the Win XP connect to another non-SBS SQL Server?

As for the registry settings, SBS normally installs SQL as a named instance, therefore the registry keys are different. EG:

Default instance keys are located at,

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer

Named instance keys are located at,

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\<instance name>\MSSQLServer
