Can''t Manage Services in SSMS

  • Hello All.

This may sound like a stupid question, but I can't manage the Agent or the SQL service from SSMS.  When I connect to my servers, the icon that displays whether the service is running is just a white circle.  And when I right-click the commands to 'Start', 'Stop' and 'Pause' are all grayed out.

Can someone explain this to me?

    Thanks!

    Eddie

  • Sounds like a permissions issue.......Do you have the correct permissions to manage the server your attaching to? And has the server been set up to allow remote connections?

  • Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I am a member of the sysadmin role.  This is a development server that I have been working remotely on for a few weeks.

  • I just added my account to the Local Admin group on the box and it seems to be OK.

I was an admin there a couple of weeks ago - maybe I should clean out my desk

    Thanks again.

  • So, now can someone explain to me why as a sysadmin in the SQL server I don't have the authority to affect the SQL services unless I am also a Local Admin on the box?

    This is new

  • lol....

  • It would be because you simply didn't have the authority to start and stop services from the system perspective, so regardless of what rights you had in SQL Server, the system would prevent it.
