I keep getting messages saying it can't access the file or the file is missing. Mostly it's this file:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\msenc90.dll
Some times it's others. The file is there and the datetime stamp keeps getting updated.
I installed VS 2008 and SP1 before I tried to install SQL 2008. I've also installed the 32 bit tools on another PC with no problem (except that it took forever).
Anyone see anything like this?
EDIT:
Here's something else I found while running the setup. I looked at my system process and there are two copies of setup.exe(*32) running, two copies of setup.exe and two copies of setup100.exe running (and the description for all of them is Native SQL Install Bootstraper). Not sure if this is the way it's supposed to work but is sure seems odd to have 6 setup apps running to install.

Sounds a bit like you may have accidentally double-clicked twice on the executable. Can anyone else think of another reason?

No, what is happening is when I run setup I get the main installation screen along with the three setup programs starting) and when I click the installation link on the left side and then click the top install link (for a new installation) is starts up a second version of all three setup programs. Very strange. I don't have another installation Vista installation that I can test it on.

Then perhaps it's not quite the right SETUP.EXE ? Or perhaps the AUTORUN on your optical (CD or DVD) drive is launching it as well ? In the latter case, you can test this by inserting the CD and waiting at least 5 minutes and seeing if it launches all by itself.

Oh, it launches by itself or I can run the setup.exe myself but the result is always the same.

That sure is odd... I suppose you could try replacing the mouse to see if the odd behavior continues. Also, you might try a PS/2 mouse instead of a USB mouse to see if that makes a difference, or vice versa, for that matter.
Beyond that, I'm thinking a call to Microsoft, or at least search the MS site for answers... Anyone else ?

It's not the mouse. Curious if if anyone else can startup the installer and V64 and see if it is normal for all the setup apps to run twice.

I know its been two months, but I also am having the multiple setup(32*) issue.
Running Developer Edition on x64 Ultimate, and the installation seems to hang at Install_sql_bids_Cpu64_Action: Write_NativeImage_64. Generating Native Images
I think it's been running for about 4 hours now, and that is the point where it just seems to hang every time I run the installer.
*sigh* Thanks for another quality product MS.
