I uninstalled SQL Express 2008 R2 and installed SQL Server 2008 R2, only to now not be able to log in. The system cannot find (local) or the SQL Server Instance, which is SQLSERVER. I am seeing similar issues for others on Google. Someone told me I should make the SQL Server Browser Service start up. I am not at home right now, but in a class, so cannot try it right now. I think there must be something more to this.
Has anyone had a similar issue with not finding the SQL Server Instance in order to log in?
What did you do to resolve it?

Did you install the database engine, or just the client tools?
Is the service listed in service manager? Is it running?

I installed the Database Engine, the whole 9 yards. I am not at home, but when I do get home, I'll check the services.
I finally understand what happened. I had not only removed SQL Server Express 2008 R2, but had installed SQL Server 2008R2 at least once and that didn't work, so I removed SQL Server 2008R2. What happened was that the folders and files for that server were still there, both Express and Enterprise. I uninstalled 2008R2 and then deleted the remaining folders. I reinstalled and it installed beautifully with the Instance working without a hitch.
On top of that installation, I am now installing SQL Server 2012 Enterprise.
