Can't connect to sql server 2008 developer ed. using management studio

  • I am using Windows 200I am using Windows 2008 server R2 and SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition with SP1 and SP2.

using sql server management studio I couldn't connect to the sql server. I opened up all the necessary ports. But still couldn't connect.

    Error message:

A network related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to sql server.Error 40- ........

    Any idea?

  • What was the rest of the error msg? Check you have enabled sql to allow remote connections, and check the configuration manager has the tcp/ip, shared memory, and named pipes protocols enabled. Without the full error msg its hard to diagnose.

  • I'd double check the services have started.

  • Is this on the same host that is running SQL Server?
