Cant connect to my local server after installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition

  • Hi

I recently installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition 64 bit on my laptop Windows 7 Ultimate Edition(64). The installation seem to go perfectly apart from that fact that there are no instances available in the Local Server. However, i can connect to the instance in network server why?????.

What I've done so far to resolve this issue

    1. Google search all the steps are not working for me

    2. Tried installing SP3

    3. Reinstalled the whole SQL Server 05 (once i formatted my PC)

    4. Tried to install a second instance giving it a different name called PEnvironment (I would normally expect to see the computername\PEnvironment in the local server but this was not the case. It was only available in the Network Server and i couldn't connect to it. (I would also expect in Program Files> Microsoft SQL Server to see PEnvironment which was not the case only MSSQL.1 etc)

    5. Checked the component Services

    6. Compared the version on my work laptop and against my home PC - checked SQL Server 2005 Surface Area configuration tool the server is configured for Remote Connections. The TCP/IP is disabled on my work laptop so why should it make a different enabling it on my home PC.

    Additional Information

    1. During this installation i had a copy of the software on a external hard drive - on previous occasion either copy it onto my PC or stick it on a CD then start the installation process.( Personally i don't think it really makes a difference)

    2. On the Service Account window i selected 'Local System' for the 'Use the built in System Account'

    3. No SA details were entered for ' use a domain user account'

    4. In the Authentication Mode window i selected 'Window Authentication Mode' (its my home PC i don't need just strong security in my opinion)

Am i missing something during the installation stage.

Can anyone help or instruct me on how to connect to my Local Server again

    Thanks in advance

  • Whats the exact error message you get when you trying to connect to the local instance.

How many services and what names do you have for sqlserver services under the services tab. Have you tried connecting to each of them ?

Do you have any firewall etc enabled?

  • Thanks for your reply Jayanth_Kurup

At the moment there is no error message because there is no instance for me to connect

I've attached an image of what i'm viewing

  • Click Start --> Run ---> Services.msc ---> Look for any service which start with SQL Server .

If you don't have any services it means u have not installed SQL you probably only have the SSMS ( management studio) if you have services , the instance name would be in brackets. If you have MSSQLServer in brackets then it means you have a default instance , if you have anything else there it means you have a named instance.

    Let us know your findings.

You can also click on start--> All Programs --> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 --> Configuration tools --> SQL Server Configuration Manager --> SQL Server Services. You will see if there are any SQL Server instances running on your machine.
