Cannot Uninstall SQL 2008

  • I tried to uninstall local instance of SQL 2008 from a local machine (XP SP3) and I got setup100.exe using about 50% of the CPU for more than couple of hours then I killed it.

Then I used Windows Installed Clean Up tool which removed any SQL related program but MS SQL 2008.

From here any attempt to uninstall it ends up with the same setup100.exe runnig forever at about 50% of the CPU.

Please help me to uninstall the SQL!

    SQL: enterprise edition

    Computer: Dell, Pentium D 2.8 MHz, 3 GB, HDD 80GB(30 GB free), HDD2 900GB (500 GB free).

  • We were put in the position to rebuild our SQL environment due to catastrophic failures where the SQLBOOT.dll file was no longer available in addition to a plethora of SQL configuration failures. After looking deeper into the issue, I found a number of items that had to be corrected.

1.Enterprise edition installed for (SSDS, SSAS, SSRS, SSIS) on a Development server.

2.Enterprise evaluation edition installed for (SQL Client, SQL Writer, SQL Brower).

    3.SQL Server 2005 still remained.

Problem: I was unable to uninstall SQL Server 2008 using the conventional method (Add/Remove Programs).

Resolution: Instead I had to use Microsoft’s Windows Install Clean Up utility and manually remove all references of all previous installs using the method outlined in Mark Michaelis’ Weblog.

    I hope this helps!
