OS: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. MSDE 2000.
SQL Server Enterprise Manager Version 8.0.
The Maintenance Plan Wizard will not allow me to specify a value for the 'Remove Files...' I can enter a number but there is nothing in the drop down e.g. 3 'DAYS' perhaps?
Create then plan and then edit - yields the same result.
Any ideas on why there is no 'dimension' for Remove Files Older than ?
Appreciate any tips, ideas, etc.
Thank.s

You're two service packs behind, but I'm surprised. Is this the same on other workstations servers if you connect to this server? I don't remember a bug for this, but I suspect a problem with the client tools.

I remember that being a "bug" in MSDE 2000.
Not sure if any of the service packs fixed it.
My workaround was to edit the job after finishing the maintenance wizard and add the "-DelBkUps 3DAYS" option in the jobstep.

Actually Steve, he is on SP4 for SQL 2000, the SP2 refers to Windows 2003.

Did anyone ever find why this happened? I just came upon a server that also has no values in the dropdown. Same specs - SQL 2000 MSDE running SP4 (2039).
Thanks,
Chad

This is a 'feature' of MSDE. I had a long discussion with PSS that DBAs in a large organisation should not need to spend any more time managing a MSDE instance than they need to manage a full Enterprise Edition instance. Everything that EM can do for a EE instance should be possible on MSDE.
The PSS view was that MSDE is designed for small organisations, so it did not matter that EM could not set up maintenance plans on MSDE. This ignores the fact that MSDE gets automatically installed by numerous MS products, and these sometimes need as much support as full SQL Server.
If you look at the DLLs installed with MSDE and full SQL, you can identify a missing DLL in EM. In SQL7, if you copied this DLL to a MSDE instance you got the full functionality back in EM, but I don't think I ever got this to work with SQL Server 2000 MSDE - it was a long time ago!
After a time there were matching dents in my head and my desk...
There is a workround... You can set up your maintenance plan using EM, but the resulting code in the SQL Agent jobs will not have the keywords to tidy the old files. Look in a similar job on a full SQL instance, identify the keywords needed, then edit the MSDE jobs and add the missing values. The maintenance plan will then do all you need. Beware that if you open the maintenance plan in EM, you risk the jobs being reset back to their original state.
