Cannot install SQL Server 2005

  • I have two ESX virtual machines in a domain running W2K3 Enterprise with SP2. I have successfully installed SQL Server 2005 with workstation and client tools on one of the servers, and have attached a database and verified that all is working as expected.

I am testing a failover product, and need to install a second copy of SQL Server 2005 (also with tools) on the second ESX virtual machine. The installation appears to proceed normally, asks for the second CD, and completes. However, instead of seeing sever SQL Server services started on that second system I only see the SQL Server Integration Services service, and when I run the Management Studio there is no SQL Server instance, so it cannot connect to anything.

Any ideas? I have uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server 2005 several times, and even used a brand new VM....with no luck.

  • You may not have installed the Database Services. Go through the install again and make sure to select "SQL Server Database Services". Here is an article with screen shots.

  • Ken,

Thanks, that did the trick. Not quite sure why, as I didn't select that box on the first install and everything went ok (at least I don't remember checking that box). However, all is well now and I thank you.

I just realized that I posted this message to the wrong category, I'll be more careful next time.

    many thanks,

    Jim
